The Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) Staff Welfare Association successfully conducted its elections on Saturday, 7th 2024 under the supervision of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). The peaceful event saw key leadership positions contested, while others went unopposed.
For the position of President, Modou A. Njie retained his seat with 284 votes, defeating Musa Manneh, who garnered 226 votes. Bolong Badjie emerged as the Vice President after receiving 299 votes, beating Ebrima Jobarteh, who received 211 votes. In the contest for Secretary General, Bakary B. Darboe won with 274 votes against Pa Alieu Ceesay’s 227 votes. In one of the closest races, Mariama Dampha was elected Social and Welfare Secretary with 256 votes, narrowly surpassing incumbent Musa Ndow, who obtained 248 votes.
The election was preceded by the first-ever presidential debate, held on Thursday 5th 2024 and moderated by Baboucar Nani Sey, the KETP Communication Officer, alongside staff from the KMC Community Radio. This debate provided a platform for the candidates to clarify their vision, fostering transparency and helping the electorate make informed choices.
Several positions were filled unopposed, including Assistant Secretary General (Lamin Jobarteh), Treasurer (Mamadi Jawo), Public Relations Officer (Kemo Ceesay), Assistant Social and Welfare Secretary (Demba Jallow), Procurement Officer (Yankuba Njie), and Sport Secretary (Abdoulie Gaye). Additionally, positions such as Assistant Treasurer, Auditor, and Assistant Sport Secretary were uncontested.
Following the announcement of the results, both Modou A. Njie and Musa Manneh congratulated one another in a show of sportsmanship and unity. Their mutual respect highlighted a commitment to the Association’s well-being, as they expressed excitement and optimism for the future.
The atmosphere was marked by cheers and a sense of camaraderie among staff, reinforcing the idea that, regardless of the outcome, all candidates shared a common goal: to improve the welfare of KMC employees. This gesture of togetherness left an imprint on the attendees, setting a positive tone for the newly elected leadership to work collaboratively moving forward.
