Journalist Bakary Mankajang, on Monday, continued his testimony in the ongoing trial of Ousainou Bojang, an accused standing trial for the death of two police officers, leaving the third with serious injuries.

Bakary Mankajang, testifying before Justice Ebrima Jaiteh of Banjul High Court, as the tenth defense witness, in testimony on Monday, stated that he had an interview with the third prosecution witness, Mama Jabbi.

Mankajang affirmed having an interview with Mama Jabbi in connection with the alleged PIU shooting incident that happened at the Sukuta Traffic Light before the matter was filed before the court.

At that point, defense lawyer Lamin J. Darboe, representing the first accused, Ousainou Bojang, informed the court that the witness possessed both the edited and unedited interview versions of Jabbi.

Defense lawyer Darboe added that Mankajang was ready to tender the audio recording to the court.

Defense lawyer Darboe appealed to the court for the unedited and edited versions of the witness interview with Jabbi to be admitted and marked as an exhibit.

At that point, the court ordered Mankajang to produce the same.

After listening to the content, the court found that the said audio recorded interview was relevant in the case in dispute.

Despite the lead state lawyer A. Wakawa’s objection to the admissibility of the said recorded audio interview of Jabbi, who argued that such was not in accordance with the Evidence Act.

However, the presiding Judge overruled his objection, stating that his objection was misconceived.

In his ruling, Justice Jaiteh stated that the purpose of the certificate requirement is to safeguard the authenticity and reliability of data.

Justice Jaiteh added that it is produced or computed by a computer; as such, it involves financial cost, digital analytics, or algorithmic outputs, where errors in processing could materially affect accuracy.

Meanwhile, the recorded interview’s audio was admitted by the presiding judge as Exhibit D37.

The case continues today, Tuesday at 1:00 pm.
