A recent audio by former Gambian president Yahya Jammeh proposing to return home in November 2025 from Equatorial Guinea has stimulated widespread debate and brought important issues to a sharper focus, such as legal and political issues.
According to the trumpeted audio, Jammeh described his homecoming as personal, and political analysts are concerned about the complexity of potential legal and political discourse.
The former president, who has spent nearly a decade in Equatorial Guinea since 2017 to date after the 2016 disputed presidential election, said in a recorded audio with his usual voice relayed on a Sunday to his supporters in Kanilai, his hometown and stronghold, that “Nobody can prevent me from coming in. I have missed my country”, he ascertained.
He added that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with regional and international actors guarantees six months for his return without preconditions.
Jammeh further explained that the MoU was drafted during meetings with former leaders, including Guinean President Alpha Condé and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, and signed by Gambian and UN representatives. “I signed it, and I believe Alpha Condé and others did as well,” he revealed.
The announcement raises questions about legal and constitutional mechanisms, particularly concerning the Supreme Court’s role, which Jammeh insists was biased during his initial departure. “The Supreme Court was supposed to judge. That is the democratic and legal solution. The constitution was disrespected because of a hidden agenda,” he said.
Despite Jammeh’s intent to return peacefully to the Gambia, political implications will still be imminent, experts say. While observers say that Jammeh’s return is a wait-and-see political affair, whether it will be a blessing in disguise or not regarding political stability and national cohesion.
However, supporters of the APRC have been admonished to remain law-abiding citizens in tandem with Jammeh’s promise to be law-abiding himself. And that Momodou Yafaye Tamba and the team of the APRC are expected to handle the return arrangements and preparations in the coming weeks.
