Inter- Party committee urges political parties to curb hate- speech internally

Gambian political parties have pledged to work together to curb hate speech ahead of the 2026 presidential election, which is expected to be fiercely contested.

The commitment was made during a national conference held on Thursday at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre, organised by the Inter-Party Committee (IPC) — the umbrella body representing all registered political parties in The Gambia.

The IPC’s initiative aims to promote unity among political actors and ensure peaceful and violence-free elections.

Cherno M. Jallow, Vice Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), commended the IPC for convening what he described as a “timely and relevant dialogue.”

Jallow stressed that ensuring inclusive, transparent, and peaceful elections requires collective national effort, not just from the IEC but from all political stakeholders.

He noted that hate speech remains a persistent problem across party lines, warning that it undermines national cohesion and public trust.

“I would urge each and every stakeholder to make sure that the fight against hate speech is prioritised. It should not be done only at the level of the IPC but internally within political parties,” Jallow said.
