Hamat Bah: Cabinet Committee Still Handling Sale of Jammeh Assets

By Fatou Krubally

The Gambia’s Minister of Lands, Regional Government and Religious Affairs, Hon. Hamat N.K. Bah said on Monday that the process of disposing of former President Yahya Jammeh’s assets is ongoing and far from complete.

Bah, who has been the country’s longest-serving cabinet minister since January 2017, appeared before the Special Select Committee investigating the sale and disposal of assets identified by the Janneh Commission. He aimed to clarify misinformation and explain the structured government procedures overseeing the process.

“The committee is still active because not all assets have been sold. We continue to meet to decide what to sell and what to retain,” Bah said, stressing that both the technical and task force committees serve in advisory capacities, with final decisions resting with the cabinet.

He explained that after the Janneh Commission submitted its report, the cabinet reviewed it and issued a white paper highlighting which recommendations to implement. A cabinet task force was formed to examine the assets and advise on their management, while a technical committee of permanent secretaries and support staff guided valuations and procedures.

According to the minister, assets approved for sale are handled through public tender, with payments directed to the national treasury and titles issued to successful buyers. Assets deemed necessary for government use are retained.

On previously frozen lands, Bah said court approvals have allowed some properties to be released for investment. The Attorney General’s Chambers has directed the Gambia Tourism Board to manage these properties. He also noted that additional assets beyond those identified by the Janneh Commission have been discovered, though a comprehensive list is yet to be compiled.

Bah added that minutes and reports of the committees are kept at the Attorney General’s Chambers, ensuring that cabinet oversight continues at every stage.
