One Abdou Camara, a resident of Gunjur, was arraigned before Magistrate K.B. Sambou of the Brikama Magistrates’ Court on 1st October on three counts, including assaulting a police officer in the execution of his duty.
Sergeant 4422 M.J. Sallah, assisted by Corporal 7232 E. Fofana, appeared for the Inspector General of Police, while the accused was unrepresented.
On the first count, Camara was charged with stealing contrary to Section 226 of the Criminal Offences Act of The Gambia. The particulars of offence state that on or about 8th September 2025 at Gunjur, West Coast Region, he stole two mobile phones an Itel and a Tecno valued at D9,000 each, being the property of one Ebrima Dibba.
On the second count, also under Section 226, Camara was accused of stealing a Tecno mobile phone valued at D7,000, the property of one Saikou Jafuneh, on the same date and at the same location.
On the third count, he was charged with assaulting a police officer in due execution of his duty contrary to Section 199 of the Criminal Offences Act. The particulars alleged that on 8th September 2025, at Gunjur, Camara unlawfully assaulted Police Constable Omar Sambou, injuring his leg and tearing his uniform.
The charges were read to him in English and interpreted into Mandinka, which he chose to understand. Camara pleaded guilty to the two theft counts but denied the assault charge.
Prosecutor Sgt. Sallah applied for a short adjournment to present the facts and for sentencing on the theft counts. He further urged that the accused remain in custody, noting that “if he is kept at Mile 2, he may change his plea.”
The court granted the application and adjourned the case to 2nd October 2025 for presentation of facts and sentencing on the theft charges, while ordering that the accused remain in police custody.
