Guinea-Bissau Opposition Condemns alleged “staged coup.”

By Haddy Touray

The opposition coalition Front Populaire on Wednesday condemned what it describes as an “attempted staged coup d’État” aimed at preventing the publication of provisional electoral results expected on 27 November.

In a statement issued in Bissau, the coalition accused outgoing President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of acting “in collusion” with the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, General Biaguê Na N’tam, to “subvert the will of the electorate.” The Front Populaire alleges that militia groups linked to the Presidency were involved in the operation carried out earlier in the day.

According to the opposition, the alleged plan seeks to block the release of election results “that would confirm the President’s defeat.” The statement further claims that Embaló intends to appoint an interim head of state and government before calling new presidential elections in which he would be a candidate.

The Front Populaire also questioned the President’s claim that he was being detained by the armed forces, noting that he had granted interviews to international media on Wednesday.

The coalition additionally accused Embaló of ordering an attack by the National Guard on the headquarters of the National Electoral Commission ahead of the alleged operation.

In its declaration, the opposition movement condemned what it termed a “criminal manoeuvre,” and held both Embaló and General Na N’tam responsible for any consequences arising from the unfolding situation. It called on “all national forces” to resist what it considers a threat to constitutional order and urged the international community not to remain silent.

There has been no immediate reaction from the Presidency, the Armed Forces, or the National Electoral Commission to the allegations.
