Groundnut vendors remain devastated as fire crippled their business

Dozens of vendors, mainly dealing in Groundnut and maize, wake up to the news that a fire ravaged their stalls near the Brikama Car Park.

Eyewitnesses and some vendors who granted interviews to this medium could not account for the damages in monetary and material terms but said the destruction was overwhelming.

” I recently took loans of D30 to purchase Groundnut from Niamina, which I promised to pay in 3 months. Unfortunately, everything perished “Bai Modou Mbye said

Stretching from the entrance of the Brikama Car Park to the perimeter fence of the Brikama mini stadium, the ruins of the inferno could be seen scattered as police reinforce security to avoid looting.

Witnesses said the Fire and Rescue Service responded early to put off the fire but were slow to contain it.

” I saw them coming while I was standing at the corner. They tried to prevent further spread of the fire, but a lot of damage is already done,” Sam Njie, a driver, quoted.

Kaddy Jobe empathised with the victims but, however, expressed worry that he already contracted a Groundnut paste producer who would not be able to deliver her Groundnut due to the fire outbreak.

Meanwhile, this medium was also informed that the interior minister, the chairman of the Brikama Area Council, among other officials, visited the scene this morning.
