This event saw participation from all sports associations in The Gambia, highlighting the nation’s collective enthusiasm for sports.
Bakary Y. Badjie, the Minister of Youth and Sports, underscored the global significance of this day for sports. He noted that, although the official celebration is scheduled for tomorrow, The Gambia chose to celebrate it today in anticipation of the upcoming Olympics in Paris next month. Minister Badjie reaffirmed the commitment of his ministry and the government to supporting sports and enhancing its infrastructure.
Olympic Day, celebrated on June 23 each year, commemorates the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the modern Olympic Movement. This day marks the anniversary of the IOC’s establishment in 1894 by Pierre de Coubertin. Paris, a city renowned for its vibrant celebrations promoting physical activity and Olympic values, is preparing to host the 2024 Summer Olympics, which will commence on July 26, 2024.
The GNOC’s early celebration reflects The Gambia’s dedication to the Olympic spirit and its readiness to contribute to the global sporting community.
