On Tuesday, April 22, 2025, the Tanji Border Patrol Unit, in collaboration with the State Intelligence Services (SIS), intercepted 77 suspected would-be migrants in Sanyang.
The group was transported to the Tanji Border Patrol Unit for processing and profiling. Among them were 36 Gambians, 11 Senegalese, 22 Guineans, 2 Nigerians, and 6 Malians — including 7 females and 5 minors.
Preliminary investigations identified Saikou Camara, a native of Farato, as the key coordinator of the operation. He is alleged to have recruited migrants across The Gambia, promising travel to the Canary Islands through irregular routes. He reportedly collected payments from over 200 individuals.
The migrants were initially harboured in a compound in Jalambang before being moved to Sanyang on April 20. While awaiting departure, 77 individuals were intercepted by Immigration officers; others fled the scene.
A follow-up team dispatched to apprehend Saikou Camara in Farato was informed he was out of town, with no known return date.
The GID reaffirms its commitment to combating irregular migration and urges the public to support its efforts through timely intelligence sharing.
Investigations are ongoing.
