Gambian Youth Parliamentarians Take Oath Of Office

By: Isatou Sarr

The National Youth Parliament (NYP) on Monday held its 10th swearing-in ceremony for newly elected youth parliamentarians from across the country.

The event, hosted at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre, brought together government officials, National Assembly members, and development partners.

Speaking at the ceremony, NYP’s former Speaker, Hon. Omar Cham, congratulated the new members and reminded them of the responsibilities that come with their positions.

“You are not here to occupy seats but to serve the people you represent. Let your tenure be guided by sacrifice and justice, and let your actions strengthen the legacy the NYP has built since its inception,” Cham said.

He challenged the youth parliamentarians to tackle persistent issues affecting young people, including corruption, financial constraints, and irregular migration.

“The NYP was not brought to where it is today by mere fantasies. It was built through sacrifices, commitment, and the willingness to put the institution first. Make your voices heard, but do it with discipline, integrity, calmness, tolerance, and respect for the rule of law. These are the ethos of what a parliamentarian truly looks like,” Cham added.

He further urged the parliamentarians to engage in robust debates, uphold the highest standards of parliamentary conduct, and prioritize the welfare of their constituents.

“Your success is defined not by individual brilliance but by the collective actions or resolutions you undertake on behalf of your constituents,” he said.

Cham emphasized the importance of listening to citizens, noting that young people play a significant role in the country’s economic development.

“The voices of the citizens matter. The aspirations of the citizens should always come first. Let your tenure truly represent the voice of the people,” he remarked.

Among the newly elected members, Jabou Sisawo, representing Upper Fulladu West, was elected Speaker of the 10th National Youth Parliament, while Hon. Bukary Gaye, member for Sabach Sanjal, was appointed Deputy Speaker.

The Office of the Clerk reiterated its commitment to support the new parliamentarians, maintain an open-door policy, and collaborate on initiatives that advance the interests of Gambian youth.
