Gambia U-17 Register Emphatic Victory Against Liberia

By: Kemo Kanyi

The Gambia national U-17 team bounced back in style with a commanding 4–0 victory over Liberia in the ongoing WAFU-A U-17 Championship in Bamako, Mali.

After a 2–0 defeat to Guinea Bissau in their opening fixture, the Young Scorpions came into the match determined to keep their qualification hopes alive and they did so emphatically.

Ahmed Njundu Kanyi opened the scoring with a close-range finish before Alagie Baba Leigh doubled the lead in the 36th minute to give The Gambia a comfortable half-time advantage.

Captain Alieu Drammeh extended the lead from the penalty spot in the 61st minute, while Modou Loum sealed the dominant performance with a late goal deep into stoppage time.

In the other Group A encounter, hosts Mali and Guinea Bissau played out a thrilling 1–1 draw.

The result puts The Gambia back in contention as they look ahead to their next decisive group-stage fixture.
