The World Bank Group has approved $45 million in grant financing from the International Development Association (IDA) to support The Gambia’s efforts to strengthen domestic revenue, develop infrastructure, promote private sector growth, and enhance climate resilience.
“The Gambia is on a positive growth trajectory despite recent external shocks, but growth remains fragile due to structural weaknesses, including climate vulnerability. To sustain growth and improve living standards, it is essential to pursue and accelerate transformational reforms,” said Ephrem Niyongabo, World Bank economist and task team leader for the project.
He notes that this is the first development policy support operation aimed at underpinning reforms for inclusive and sustainable growth.
The program rests on three pillars: Revenue Mobilization, focusing on expanding the tax base and rationalizing tax expenditures; Private Sector Development, targeting bottlenecks in sectors such as energy, telecommunications, and business environment while advancing human capital development for women and youth; and Climate Resilience, which strengthens institutional and legal frameworks for climate action and coastal zone management.
“This financing will allow The Gambia to build fiscal space, improve the business environment, and enhance private sector participation. It will also expand access to essential services, increase employment opportunities for women and youth, and support environmental sustainability,” said Franklin Mutahakana, World Bank Group Resident Representative in The Gambia.
The initiative aligns with the government’s Gambia Recovery-Focused National Development Plan (2023-2027) and supports a green, resilient, and inclusive development agenda by integrating climate adaptation and disaster risk management into territorial and sectoral planning.
