Sanna Manjang, a former member of the notorious paramilitary unit known as the “Junglers” within the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), has been arrested. Manjang was one of the most frequently cited figures during the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC), where he was accused of involvement in numerous heinous crimes committed under the regime of former President Yahya Jammeh.
Confirming the development, Major Malick Sanyang, spokesperson of the GAF, stated: “The GAF is working with its partners to do the needful.”
Manjang fled the country in 2016 following Jammeh’s shock electoral defeat, and has since been reported to be residing in neighboring countries. His name repeatedly surfaced during TRRC hearings, where victims and witnesses linked him to extrajudicial killings, torture, and other grave human rights violations.
For many Gambians, particularly survivors and families of victims, his arrest marks a significant step toward justice and accountability. It is widely seen as a welcomed development that could pave the way for closure and reparation for those who suffered under Jammeh’s rule.
