Gambian authorities have taken into custody Lt. Col. Sanna Manjang, a former member of ex-president Yahya Jammeh’s feared Junglers unit, following his extradition from Senegal after eight years on the run.
Security sources told PANA that Manjang was handed over to Gambian officials on 2 December after his arrest in Senegal’s southern Casamance region during a joint operation by Senegalese and Gambian security forces.
Manjang has been a fugitive since January 2017 and is cited in the report of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) for alleged involvement in grave human rights abuses committed during the Jammeh era, including torture, enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
Legal analysts say his return could open the way for one of the most consequential prosecutions under Gambian military law in recent years.
