Former GDC National Assembly Member for Jimara, Alhagie H. Sowe, Resigns from Party

The political landscape in The Gambia’s Upper River Region (URR) has seen a significant shift today as Alhagie H. Sowe, former National Assembly Member for Jimara District, announced his immediate resignation from the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC). The move includes stepping down from his party roles as Auditor General and Regional Desk Officer for URR.
Mr. Sowe formalized his departure in a letter addressed to the Administrative Secretary of the GDC, stating that the decision, while difficult, was a “personal decision made after careful consideration.” He confirmed that, effective immediately, he ceases to be a member of the party.
Years of Service and Dedication
In his resignation letter, Sowe described the GDC as “more than a political organisation,” referring to it as a “family, a movement, and a platform” for serving the Gambian people with integrity.
He acknowledged the years of “unwavering dedication, sacrifice, and service” he had given to the party. The former parliamentarian expressed his “profound gratitude” to the party leader, Honourable Mamma Kandeh, whose leadership he said had inspired many.
Sowe also extended sincere thanks to the entire GDC executive for the “trust and confidence” placed in him, which he said “empowered [him] to carry out [his] duties with commitment and pride.”
Focus Remains on URR and Jimara
A significant portion of his statement focused on his constituency and regional supporters. Mr. Sowe expressed that he is “eternally grateful” to the supporters of the GDC, especially those in the Upper River Region and his “beloved constituency of Jimara.”
He affirmed that their belief and solidarity were the “backbone of my service.” While his party affiliation is ending, Sowe stressed that his mission for development, justice, and progress “does not end here.”
“My love for our people and my desire to bring meaningful change to their lives remain steadfast and will continue to guide my path forward,” he wrote.
Future Path Uncertain
Mr. Sowe concluded his letter by extending his best wishes to the GDC for “continued success in its endeavours” and praying that the party “remains a strong voice for the people of The Gambia.”
As of this report, it is unclear what Mr. Sowe’s next steps in the political arena will be, but his departure marks a notable loss of a high-profile figure and former National Assembly Member for the GDC, particularly in the strategically important Upper River Region.
