Amie Colley, the National Assembly Member for Foni Brefet, has issued one of her strongest public statements to date, accusing former President Yahya Jammeh of asking her to travel to Equatorial Guinea for sexual relations. She made the allegation during the ongoing meet the people tour in Foni Bondali, where she addressed supporters and elders in a charged gathering.
Colley began by expressing her long standing respect for Jammeh, noting that her admiration for him dates back to 1994. She said she was only eight years old when Jammeh took power and added that if he had married early, his first child would likely be her age or older. For that reason, she said it was insulting to suggest she would travel across the continent to engage in sexual activity with the former head of state.
She reminded the crowd that she is a married woman who is deeply committed to her husband. She said she defended Jammeh in parliament for years and never allowed anyone to criticise his record without challenge.
“In parliament no one dared talk about Jammeh and walk away freely. I stood my ground for him, but if this is how he plans to repay me by trying to destroy my marriage, I leave everything to Allah. He cannot end my marriage,” she said.
Colley went on to say that the people of Foni had gone to great lengths, including offering charity and even engaging in mass spiritual baths, all in hopes of facilitating Jammeh’s return. She said she personally bought sheep and charms in those efforts and reminded the crowd that both she and Jammeh were creations of the same God.
She also dismissed claims surrounding an audio message Jammeh allegedly shared with his supporters, describing it as misleading. She said the explanation that the voice message was interrupted by poor network was untrue because she had already listened to the full recording. She urged Jammeh to stop confusing elderly supporters who still hold him in high regard.
“I love Jammeh, not in an emotional sense, but because he is a son of Foni, an elder and a former leader who did a lot for this nation. For that reason, I plead with him to humble himself so we can appeal to President Barrow to let him return home. Everyone deserves to come back to their home,” she said. Colley ended her remarks with an emotional song dedicated to the former president, leaving the crowd in a reflective mood.
