Farato Resident in Court Over Alleged D250,000 Electrical Wire Theft

By: Isatou Sarr

A Farato resident has appeared before the Brikama Magistrates’ Court over allegations that he cut and stole electrical wiring valued at D250,000.

Bubacarr Jallow was on Thursday, 18 December 2025, arraigned before Magistrate Kanjura B. Sambou on two criminal counts relating to theft and damage to property. Inspector E. Ceesay appeared for the prosecution on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.

On the first count, Jallow was charged with theft, contrary to Section 226 of the Criminal Offences Act 2025. Prosecutors alleged that on or about 14 December 2025, at Farato Sinchu Gidom Village in the West Coast Region, he stole 2.5 electrical wires valued at D250,000 property said to belong to one Bubacarr Conteh.

The second count accused him with malicious injury to property, contrary to Section 290 of the Criminal Offences Act 2025.

According to the particulars of offence, Jallow maliciously cut electrical wires installed in Conteh’s house on the same date and at the same location.

The charges were read and explained to the accused in Wolof, which he confirmed he understood. Jallow subsequently pleaded not guilty to both counts.

The prosecuting officer applied for an adjournment to enable the prosecution to call its first witness and did not object to granting bail to the accused.

Magistrate Sambou granted the application and adjourned the matter to 22 January 2026. Jallow was admitted to bail in the sum of D300,000, with two Gambian sureties. Each surety is required to deposit a valid national identity card with the court registrar and depose to means.

The case will continue in January.
