EPL: Man City go top with Saints win as Brentford, Ipswich play thriller

Manchester City have climbed to the summit of the English Premier League after defeating Southampton at the Etihad on Saturday.

The champions sealed victory and bagged all three points through a lone goal courtesy of Erling Haaland in the fifth minute of the game.

With the win, the Pep Guardiola side go two points above Liverpool, who face Arsenal in their matchday nine clash at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The result extends City’s unbeaten Premier League record to 32 games. They are now only six weeks away from going a full 12 months since their last defeat, by Aston Villa on 6 December.

Elsewhere, Brentford and Ipswich played a seven-goal thriller, with Brentford coming from two goals down to earn all three point from the encounter.

Brentford trailed 2-0 at the half hour mark but pulled off a comeback to level before half time.

The hosts got into the lead early in the second period but Ipswich drew level just before 90 minutes, yet Brentford fires in a winner in added time to seal a 4-3 victory.

In another Premier League game played concurrently, Brighton were held to a 2-2 draw by Wolverhampton Wanderers while Aston Villa were also held by a late equaliser by Bournemouth in a 1-1 draw.
