ECOWAS says Ex- Ex-President Jammeh’s sentiments on Gambia violate asylum conditions

ECOWAS leaders have reaffirmed their zero-tolerance policy against unconstitutional changes of government following the 68th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Abuja, Nigeria. The leaders reviewed the region’s peace and security situation and emphasized the importance of democracy, constitutional order, and accountability across West Africa.

Special attention was given to The Gambia, where ECOWAS expressed serious concern over recent statements made by the country’s former president in exile. The Authority warned that such actions violate asylum conditions and pose a threat to national peace and cohesion, stressing that no individual is above the law and that any attempt to destabilize The Gambia will not be tolerated.

The summit also condemned an attempted coup in Benin and praised the swift response of security forces, while mandating the ECOWAS Commission to strengthen regional security mechanisms.
