The ECOMIG Contingent in the North Bank Region Wednesday held a sports day event with their Gambian security counterparts; the thinking behind the initiative was to boost the existing cordial ties between the local security agencies.
Ghanaian soldiers, who are part of the ECOWAS mission in The Gambia and stationed in Barra, organized a sports day event with their Gambian security counterparts in the North Bank Region. The event aimed to promote camaraderie between the foreign troops and the various Gambian security agencies. High-ranking individuals from ECOMIG, GAF, the Police, GID, the Fire Service, and other senior security officials, including the Deputy Governor of NBR, attended the event.
The day began with a football competition involving six teams: ECOMIG, GAF, Immigration, Police, Fire Service, and Ports at the Essau sandy football field. The results saw GAF and Ports opening the football competition and defeating Ports 2-0, while Fire Service also defeated ECOMIG 3-0, and Immigration beat Police 1-0.
In the semifinals, GAF and Fire Service faced off, while Immigration secured direct entry into the final. GAF emerged victorious against the Fire Service and faced Immigration in a highly competitive final. The game ended in a one-all draw, leading to a penalty shootout, where GAF emerged as winners of the football competition.
After football, the focus shifted to other sporting activities such as marathons, push-ups, volleyball, and table tennis. ECOMIG won the Marathon, Push, and Table Tennis competitions, while Ports secured victory in the Volleyball competition.
However, the Deputy Governor of North Bank Region Dembo Samateh, Said the sporting activity organized by the ECOMIG troops indicates the Unity and strong cooperation between security agencies in his region stating that this is not the first of its kind that Ghanaian troops came up with such initiatives and they very supportive to the people in the North Bank Region.
The operation commander of the second infantry battalion, Major Demba Baldeh, said the day-long event will further enhance the Civil-Military Relations between ECOMIG troops and other participating entities.
The Contingent Commander of the Ghanaian Troops, Lieutenant Colonel Abraham Puoriyelle Dery, said they have participated in many security-related activities with the sister security agencies in the region, and that’s what prompted the reunion to participate in the sporting activities to deepen the existing ties with the local forces.
The Sports Day provided an opportunity for the security agencies to engage in fun sporting activities, making it a remarkable success. It also served as a platform for interaction, sharing experiences and ideas, building connections, and exchanging pleasantries. Additionally, it presented an opportunity to foster brotherhood among the participants.
