Balancing medicine and football, Dr. Saikou Jabbie—known to many as “Campo”—is making headlines in Brikama’s Nawettan season as head coach of Wellingara FC, while serving full-time at The Gambia’s main referral hospital.
A graduate of the University of The Gambia, Dr. Jabbie has worked in the Accident and Emergency Unit at Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital for seven years. But outside the wards, he voluntarily leads Wellingara FC, a local Nawettan team, with remarkable success.
Despite the demands of his medical career, he guided the team through two consecutive Nawettan seasons—an historic first—going unbeaten in six matches last year to secure their place in the league.
Under his leadership, Wellingara FC won the prestigious inter-kabilo football tournament organised by the Brikama Sports Committee, and also competed in the Brikama North Constituency tournament, hosted by Hon. Alhagie S. Darboe.
His grassroots commitment earned him a spot in the FIFA D License coaching course at the GFF Technical Training Centre. At the end of the programme, he was named the most outstanding trainee and awarded a certificate of achievement.
