Honourable Suwaibou Touray, NAM for Wuli East, stressed the importance of diaspora voting in a recent interview on N24 Radio 105.2 FM. He emphasized that it is an obligation for all Gambians abroad aged 18 and above to participate in elections, highlighting their significant contribution to the Gambian economy. He also addressed concerns regarding the IEC’s statement on diaspora voting expenditure.
Honourable Touray further urged all Gambians to actively participate in elections, stating that those who abstain are not good citizens. He addressed the 2016 coalition’s failure and expressed willingness to consider another coalition in 2026, but only if concrete agreements are established with legal consequences for any violations. He believes that a coalition is crucial for defeating the ruling party in an election under the current single majority system.
Regarding the 2024 draft constitution, he highlighted its positive aspects, including term limits, population acts, and corruption bills. He dismissed the possibility of reverting to the 2020 draft constitution, stating that the 1997 constitution will remain in effect if the 2024 draft fails to pass.
