The Deputy Public Relations Officer of The Gambia Police Force, Inspector Mariama I. Fatty, has disclosed that the country’s crime rate is declining, attributing the trend to the recent deployment of newly recruited police officers nationwide.
In an interview with The Voice, Inspector Fatty said data received from all regions indicated that crime was not on the rise but rather decreasing. She, however, notes that cybercrime remains a growing concern due to rapid global technological advancements.
“So, we need to understand that the world is evolving. It is considered a global problem. These are new trends when it comes to criminal activities,” she said.
Inspector Fatty revealed that some cybercrime suspects operate from outside The Gambia, targeting Gambians who often fail to report such cases. She urged compound owners to conduct background checks before renting out rooms, warning that suspected cybercriminals often use apartments in The Gambia to facilitate their operations.
The Deputy Police PRO stresses that while the Police Force is mandated by law to protect lives and property, the public also bears responsibility to provide information that can help curb crime. She called on Gambians to be law-abiding and maintain peace and order for the collective good.
Inspector Fatty further appealed to young people intending to stage protests to first seek permission from the police, emphasizing that officers operate strictly within the laws of The Gambia. She encouraged the youth to familiarize themselves with those laws to fully understand their responsibilities as citizens.
