The Gambia government has expressed deep regret over the tragic death of 27-year-old Omar Badjie and announced the launch of a coroner’s inquest to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
Badjie’s death has sparked outrage across the country, with residents of the Mandinaring community taking to the streets burning tyres and demanding justice.
The young man reportedly died after falling during a hot pursuit by police and was later pronounced dead at Kanifing General Hospital.
Police responded to the protests with tear gas, resulting in the arrest of nineteen people. All were later released unconditionally as demonstrations continued into Saturday.
In a statement, the Ministry of Interior said:
“The Government regrets this unfortunate loss of life and commiserates with the family of the deceased.
“The community of Mandinaring is assured that a coroner’s inquest will be immediately instituted to ascertain the circumstances and cause of death of Omar Badjie. The outcome of the inquest and investigations will be communicated to the public accordingly.”
The government reiterated its commitment to the rule of law and the safety and security of all citizens and residents.
