Supporters of the United Democratic Party (UDP) on Saturday turned out in large numbers at Banjul International Airport to welcome their leader, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, on his return from a European tour.
The jubilant crowd, dressed in the party’s signature yellow attire, sang and danced as they celebrated the homecoming of their leader.
A convoy of vehicles later escorted Darboe from the airport to his residence in Pipeline.
However, the celebrations were overshadowed by the tragic death of Mrs. Jimbi Ceesay, a former Female Youth Wing President and Central Committee member, who died in a road accident on Friday.
According to party officials, Ceesay was travelling to the Greater Banjul Area to join supporters welcoming Darboe when the accident occurred.
In a statement, the UDP expressed deep sorrow over her passing and announced the cancellation of all celebratory activities, urging supporters to observe the day with restraint and prayer.
Party officials described Ceesay as a “dedicated and selfless member”, extending heartfelt condolences to her family and the wider Gambian community.
