Darboe Slams Barrow for ‘Turning Blind Eye’ to Corruption

By: Kemo Kanyi

United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and Secretary General, Ousainou Darboe, has accused President Adama Barrow of turning a blind eye to corruption under his administration.

Speaking during a recent engagement with UDP supporters in the diaspora, Darboe said the Barrow government’s failure to address corruption has deprived Gambians of critical development opportunities. He argued that even small amounts of misappropriated funds could have been used to improve key public sectors that continue to suffer under the current administration.

“Any amount, whether small or big, that has been misappropriated could have been used to better the lives of Gambians,” Darboe said. “The unprecedented corruption rooted in our country must be fought by every citizen. Why would the government design a law to prevent corruption yet try to cover up corrupt practices between 2017 and 2024? Is that the type of government to rescue our country?” he questioned.

Darboe cited findings from the Auditor General’s reports, noting that most corruption revelations occurred during the COVID-19 period, which he claimed the government is now attempting to “sweep under the carpet.”

Reflecting on his political journey, the veteran opposition leader described it as a selfless pursuit of national progress and accountability. “My ambition has always been to build a Gambia that earns not only the pride of its citizens but also international respect,” he added.

Darboe also expressed appreciation to the councillors of the Brikama Area Council for reaffirming their loyalty and confidence in his leadership. He said their support has renewed his optimism ahead of the 2026 presidential election, describing the West Coast Region as “the powerhouse of Gambian politics.”
