A Nigerian national, Sunday Ainbgaoso, was on Tuesday, 25 November 2025, granted bail for one million dalasis (D1,000,000), after appearing before Principal Magistrate Anna O. Mendy of the Brikama Magistrates’ Court on four counts of alleged theft.
Sgt. M.J. Sallah announced his appearance for the Inspector General of Police (IGP), while Counsel Hajum Gaye-Adrigbe represented the accused.
According to the charge sheet, the offences are said to have occurred between April and May 2024 at the Banjul International Airport in Yundum and other locations within the West Coast Region. Each of the four counts charges Ainbgaoso with stealing, contrary to Section 252 of the Criminal Code.
On the first count, the prosecution alleged that the accused stole seven cartons of cosmetics valued at D285,000, said to be the property of businessman Joachin Okoye.
The second count accuses him of stealing a carton of jewellery worth D139,300, belonging to Nwaro Fidelis Kenechukwu.
Count three alleges the theft of two cartons and a bag containing human hair and cosmetics valued at D450,000, the property of Monday Igwe.
In the fourth count, Ainbgaoso is accused of stealing a bag of human hair valued at D278,000, reportedly belonging to Frank Uzoma.
When the charges were read to him in a language he understood, the accused pleaded not guilty to all counts.
Sgt. Sallah then applied for an adjournment to allow the prosecution to call its witnesses, noting that he had no objection to the court granting bail.
Counsel Gaye-Adrigbe, in her submission, argued that the charges were bailable and that her client was not a flight risk. She described Ainbgaoso as a responsible businessman who has lived and worked in The Gambia for years and would not interfere with the ongoing investigation.
Principal Magistrate Mendy granted bail in the sum of D1 million, with three Gambian sureties. At least one surety must be a government employee and is required to deposit property documents with the court registry. All sureties must reside within the West Coast Region. The accused was further ordered to surrender all travel documents to the court.
The case was adjourned to Wednesday, 3 December 2025, for the testimony of the first prosecution witness (PW1).
