The Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) would like to clarify a recent publication surrounding the allegations of missing payment vouchers totalling GMD7,677,470.61 made in an article by The Alkamba Times.
We want to take the opportunity to clarify the Finance and Public Accounts Committee (FPAG) Report.
Missing Vouchers Allegation
Contrary to the claims of D7 million in missing vouchers, KMC confirms that there are no missing vouchers from 2018 to date. We take financial management and accountability seriously and maintain transparent records.
Audit Query Explanation
Regarding the audit query, KMC’s management did experience delays in submitting requested documents due to internal transitions at the time. Furthermore, our engagement with FPAC was not concluded due to meeting cancellations by the committee. KMC was neither engaged nor provided with a draft copy of the audit report before its publication.
Governance and Staffing Irregularities
The Kanifing Municipal Council wishes to clarify that staff appointments and redeployments fall under the purview of the Local Government Service Commission. These actions are sometimes taken without the council’s knowledge or input.
Allegations of Fraud and Misconduct
The public may recall the staff welfare land saga in 2022 involving former CEO Sainabou Martin and others regarding a D12 million loan. This matter was thoroughly investigated by the Ministry of Lands and Local Government’s appointed investigators, and the findings were shared with relevant stakeholders.
KMC is committed to transparency and accountability. We look forward to continued cooperation with relevant authorities to ensure the effective management of our operations and to provide clear communications.
