China Steps Forward as Key Partner in Gambia’s Agricultural Development

The Farmers’ Union of The Gambia has opened a new chapter in its search for stronger international partnerships, meeting with representatives of the Chinese Embassy in Bijilo on December 2nd to explore deeper cooperation in agriculture and new avenues of support for Gambian farmers.

The meeting, held late in the morning at the Embassy, brought together senior officials from both sides. The Gambian delegation was led by Farmers’ Union President Badou Bah, joined by Vice President Alagie Ceesay, Secretary General Modou Njie and agricultural advocate and Union Brand Ambassador Pa Nderry Touray. The Chinese delegation was headed by His Excellency Ambassador Liu Jin, accompanied by Economic and Commercial Counsellor Tong Zhen.

Ambassador Liu Jin described the relationship between the two countries as one built on long standing friendship and shared development priorities. He noted that China and The Gambia face similar agricultural challenges and stressed the central role that farming plays in national growth. “Both China and The Gambia share similarities, and agriculture is crucial in our efforts,” he said.

Farmers’ Union President Badou Bah expressed gratitude to the Embassy for its warm reception and reaffirmed the interest of Gambian farmers in learning from China’s extensive experience in modern agriculture. “We are pleased and thankful that you have opened your doors to us, and the Farmers’ Union is eager to learn from the masters of agriculture, China,” Bah said.

Discussions focused on the everyday challenges facing Gambian farmers, including limited access to markets and the urgent need for technical training. The Chinese representatives signalled their willingness to partner in key areas such as agricultural mechanisation, capacity building, value addition and potential investments in infrastructure that could strengthen production nationwide.

Both sides agreed to hold follow up engagements to define priority areas and translate the dialogue into concrete support for farmers across the country.The Farmers’ Union described the meeting as promising and progressive, adding that deeper cooperation with China will help boost productivity and strengthen food security in The Gambia.
