In a powerful demonstration of community service and youth empowerment, ChildFund The Gambia, in partnership with LEAP Africa and its local partners—SaamaKairo Federation, Ding-Ding Yiriwa Federation, and Foni Ding Ding Federation—mobilized hundreds of young people to commemorate the Youth Day of Service through a massive cleansing exercise in Brikama.
The activity, which took place along the stretch from Brikama District Hospital, through the bustling main market, and culminating at the Youth Friendly Centre, was a key effort to promote environmental health and community engagement. This initiative reflects ChildFund’s ongoing commitment to nurturing youth leadership and fostering a sense of responsibility among young people toward the welfare of their communities.
According to a representative of ChildFund, the event was not just about cleaning the physical environment but also about empowering youth to take an active role in the development of their communities. “Our goal is to instill in young people the values of service and collective action, which are essential for sustainable development,” the spokesperson said.
In partnership with LEAP Africa, which has been instrumental in promoting youth leadership and engagement across Africa, the initiative in Brikama aimed to encourage young people to contribute to societal change, starting with their immediate surroundings.
The cleansing exercise received widespread praise from both community leaders and the general public. Participants, drawn from diverse youth groups, expressed pride in their contributions and the opportunity to give back to their community. “This is our home, and it’s our responsibility to keep it clean and healthy for everyone,” one participant shared.
By involving local partners such as SaamaKairo Federation, Ding-Ding Yiriwa Federation, and Foni Ding Ding Federation, ChildFund The Gambia ensured that the initiative was inclusive, engaging communities from various parts of the region. These federations have long been pillars in supporting ChildFund’s mission of creating environments where children and youth can thrive.
The Youth Day of Service cleansing exercise is just one example of how ChildFund continues to drive meaningful change through youth empowerment, community service, and collaboration with strategic partners.
As the day came to a close, it was clear that the initiative had not only made an immediate impact on the cleanliness of Brikama but also inspired a deeper commitment among youth to serve their communities.
