Cabinet Approves Gambia’s Sports Bill 2025

By: Kemo Kanyi

In a landmark step for Gambian sports, the Cabinet has approved the National Sports Bill 2024, paving the way for its tabling before the National Assembly for consideration, sources revealed.

The Bill, presented to Cabinet last Thursday by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Bakary Y. Badjie, was introduced in the form of a Cabinet Paper. After extensive deliberations, it received approval for a move that marks a new chapter in the governance and development of sports in the country.

The proposed legislation seeks to establish a comprehensive framework for improved sports governance. Among its key reforms are the transformation of the National Sports Council into a Sports Authority, the protection of athletes’ rights, and clear guidelines for sports marketing and management of associations.

Other major provisions of the Bill include the establishment of a Sports Tribunal, an Anti-Doping Platform, and a Sports Development Fund to promote transparency, fairness, and sustainability in the sector.

Reacting to the Cabinet’s decision, Minister Badjie expressed optimism that the new law will strengthen the management and regulation of sports in The Gambia.

“This Bill will improve the overall administration of sports, create a special fund for development, and introduce clear regulations to guide associations in line with the law and international best practices,” he said.
