In what the Ministry of Youth and Sports described as a “landmark move for Gambian sports,” the Cabinet has approved the National Sports Bill 2025, setting the stage for its presentation before the National Assembly for consideration.
The Bill, presented to Cabinet by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Bakary Y. Badjie, on Thursday, aims to modernise the governance and administration of sports across the country. In a statement issued by the ministry on Tuesday, October 28th, the new legislation was described as a comprehensive framework for improved management of sports institutions and athlete welfare.
Among its key provisions are the transformation of the National Sports Council into a Sports Authority, the establishment of a Sports Tribunal, an Anti-Doping Platform, and a Sports Development Fund. It also introduces measures to enhance athlete rights, sports marketing, and accountability within national associations.
In its statement, the Ministry of Youth and Sports said the law “will help in general management of sport, including the creation of a special sport fund and a regulation to manage associations in line with law and international best practices.”
Once tabled before the National Assembly, the Bill is expected to undergo detailed scrutiny before being enacted into law, marking what officials say will be a new era in Gambian sports governance.
