National Assembly Member (NAM) for Busumbala Constituency, Hon. Muhammad Kanteh, has responded to President Adama Barrow’s recent remarks accusing him of neglecting the concerns of his constituents.
In an interview with The Voice Newspaper, Kanteh described the President’s comments as “unfortunate.”
“I was not aware that the President would be holding a meeting in my constituency,” he said. “I was attending a parliamentary session during his visit, as the budget session had begun. In fact, that same day, the Assembly was engaged in the Committee of Supply to scrutinize various budget allocations for ministries and departments.”
Hon. Kanteh emphasizes that his primary responsibility as a parliamentarian is to represent his constituents effectively in the National Assembly.
“My mandate is to voice their concerns to the executive through parliamentary debates, which I always do to the best of my ability. Participating in budget bilaterals ensures that critical concerns are reflected in the national budget for proper execution by the executive branch,” he stated.
He further clarified roles and responsibilities within government:
“I want to make it clear to the President that it is not the responsibility of a NAM to implement road construction.”
The Busumbala lawmaker also highlighted several development initiatives undertaken in his constituency during his tenure.
“I have drilled many boreholes in different areas, even beyond what the Constituency Development Fund provides. I have also supported communities in completing development projects such as mosques, churches, football fields, hospitals, and schools,” he said.
NAM Kanteh concluded by challenging President Barrow to focus on delivering for Gambians rather than engaging in personal attacks.
