An intelligence-led operation by the Tanji Immigration Border Patrol Unit to intercept a suspected migrant smuggling attempt in Kartong was disrupted in the early hours of Thursday, 19 March 2026, after officers encountered an armed individual at sea.
The patrol team, led by the Commanding Officer of the Kartong Immigration Post, navigated approximately four kilometres offshore where a boat suspected to be preparing for an irregular migration journey was located. At the scene, officers found a large group of would-be migrants alongside a vessel fitted with two engines.
However, the operation took a dangerous turn when the team came face-to-face with a man clad in military camouflage and armed with a rifle, believed to be providing security for the migrants and the organisers behind the smuggling network.
Prioritising the safety of personnel, the team made a tactical withdrawal and immediately requested reinforcement from the Gambia Navy. In response, naval officers from Kartong, supported by colleagues from Gunjur, were deployed to assist in the operation.
Upon returning to the scene with reinforcements, officers were informed by local fishermen that the migrants had already departed, evading interception.
The incident highlights a worrying shift in migrant smuggling operations in The Gambia, with increasing sophistication and armed protection posing heightened risks to security forces. Authorities have reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on migrant smuggling and called for stronger community cooperation to combat the growing threat.
