By Aja Beyai

In a monumental moment for Gambian women’s football, Berewuleng FC has clinched an unprecedented double, securing both the GFF Women’s League and FF Cup titles in a season that will be remembered for years to come. Their commanding 2-0 victory over the defending champions, Red Scorpions, in the FF Cup final at Brikama Box Baa Mini Stadium, paired with their stellar league campaign, has cemented Berewuleng FC as a powerhouse in the sport.

The FF Cup final showcased Berewuleng’s tactical brilliance and relentless spirit. The deadlock held until the 75th minute when Ellen Gomez rose above the defense to deliver a pinpoint header off a corner kick, igniting wild celebrations among the fans. Seven minutes later, Ma Fanta Drammeh sealed the victory with another expertly taken header, ensuring a 2-0 scoreline and the coveted FF Cup trophy. The goals underscored Berewuleng’s mastery of set pieces, a cornerstone of their strategy throughout the season.

Head coach Fakebba Saine credited the team’s meticulous preparation for their triumph over a formidable Red Scorpions side. “Playing against Red Scorpions is never easy, but our plan made the difference,” Saine said post-match. “We focused on capitalizing on our opportunities, especially from set pieces, and the players executed perfectly.” His words reflect the discipline and unity that have defined Berewuleng’s campaign.

Berewuleng’s dual triumphs come with significant rewards. For their FF Cup victory, they claimed a D250,000 prize, medals, and a towering trophy. Their dominance in the GFF Women’s League earned them a separate championship trophy and widespread acclaim. More importantly, the double crowns have secured Berewuleng FC a spot in the CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers, a platform to test their mettle against Africa’s elite clubs. This opportunity marks a historic milestone for the team and Gambian football, as they prepare to carry the nation’s flag on the continental stage.

The significance of Berewuleng’s achievements extends beyond the pitch. Their success has sparked a wave of pride among fans and ignited aspirations for young female footballers across The Gambia. The team’s journey from local contenders to national champions exemplifies perseverance, teamwork, and excellence. As they gear up for the CAF qualifiers, Berewuleng FC stands poised to make a lasting impact, not only in Gambian sports history but also on the broader African stage. With their talent and determination, the sky is the limit for this remarkable squad.
