Bensouda vs. Kurang: High Stakes Defamation Showdown Begins.

The High Court in Bakau, sitting in Banjul, opened proceedings in a dramatic defamation battle between senior lawyer Amie Bensouda and former Janneh Commission secretary Alhaji Mamadi Kurang.

Bensouda, the Commission’s former Lead Counsel, is suing Kurang for D144 million, alleging he has made false statements on social media and in media interviews since his 2018 removal, damaging her professional reputation.

Kurang insists his remarks were grounded in firsthand experiences and aimed at exposing procedural irregularities and potential conflicts of interest within the Commission. He claims the lawsuit is an attempt to stifle his whistleblowing and has filed a D200 million counterclaim against Bensouda’s legal team over their cease and desist letter.

The court heard that Kurang’s lawyers intend to challenge jurisdiction and argue that Bensouda bypassed the legally required Alternative Dispute Resolution process. Bensouda’s team said they would respond after receiving the formal objection.

The case has been adjourned to 17th November 2025, with legal analysts anticipating a tense courtroom showdown.
