The Mayor of the Banjul City Council, Rohey Malick Lowe, has issued a strong warning against illegal waste disposal, pledging stricter enforcement of anti-littering laws to hold offenders accountable.
Speaking at a press conference held at the council’s offices on December 18th 2025, Mayor Lowe expressed disappointment over what she described as irresponsible behaviour that continues to undermine the council’s efforts to keep the city clean.
She urged residents of Banjul and daily visitors to respect existing anti-littering regulations in the interest of the city’s wellbeing.
“People will accumulate excessive waste and wait until nighttime to discard it on the streets. This behaviour must cease, as we will pursue legal action against anyone caught doing so,” she cautioned.
Mayor Lowe stressed that despite the council’s ongoing efforts to maintain cleanliness, irresponsible actions by residents and visitors remain a major challenge.
“We will set precedents for offenders because this behaviour will only change if we enforce the law against those who violate it,” she said.
She also appealed to law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, and the central government to support the council by ensuring that offenders are properly prosecuted, noting that accountability is key to deterring further violations.
“We aspire to make Banjul the cleanest city, a place where everyone can take pride, just like in other cities,” she added.
Mayor Lowe further highlighted the recently launched Urban Youth-led Cleaning Initiative, implemented by REFELA, describing it as a clear demonstration of the council’s commitment to maintaining a clean and orderly city.
