President Adama Barrow and several members of his cabinet have stepped up their criticisms of Brikama Area Council (BAC) Chairman Yankuba Darboe as the president’s Meet-the-People-Tour continues through the West Coast Region.
The officials accused the chairman of failing to provide adequate development for the region.
Speaking during a meeting in Brikama on Sunday, November 23rd, President Barrow described Chairman Darboe as a leader who “has failed the people of the West Coast Region.” He argued that a person who “cannot manage waste” or maintain “the market at his office doorstep, which is filled with insects,” should not be expected to manage larger development projects such as road construction.
The president also dismissed Darboe’s recent remarks, claiming that a future UDP-led council would distribute five million dalasi to each ward, calling the statement “impossible and laughable.”
Barrow further disclosed that his government had initiated plans to construct a 1,200-shop market in Brikama, starting with an initial phase of 80 shops. He alleged that Chairman Darboe attempted to take full control of the project, which he said created friction between the chairman and the regional governor. According to the president, he instructed the Minister for Local Government to halt the project “unless the current chairman is voted out.”
He urged residents of the West Coast Region to remove Darboe from office if they want the suspended market project to proceed.
Joining the criticism against Darboe, Minister of Agriculture Dr. Demba Sabally said Chairman Darboe had not constructed “even one kilometer of road” since assuming office. He further accused the BAC of raising household tax from D200 to D2,000, an amount he argued even property owners in Banjul do not pay.
Dr. Sabally also criticized the United Democratic Party (UDP), claiming the party only praises the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) when results favor them and condemns the commission when outcomes go against them. He added that individuals who declare themselves winners before official announcements “should be seen as rebels,” arguing that if the IEC had not formally announced Darboe’s victory, “he would not have been chairman today.”
