Alhagie Amadou Kora, a politician and businessman, yesterday provided detailed testimony before the Special Select Committee investigating the sale and disposal of assets identified by the Janneh Commission. Kora recounted first hand observations of cattle sales in Kanilai,

Shedding light on events that occurred after the departure of former President Yahya Jammeh.

Alagie Kora, who has been involved in livestock trading since 1987 through the Ministry of Agriculture’s Department of Livestock, said he first learned of the sales while travelling from Basse to Kombo. “I heard from people along the way that cattle were being sold in Kanilai, so I decided to go and see for myself,” he told the committee.

Arriving at Kanilai around 1 pm, Kora described a bustling scene of buyers and sellers. He noted a person called Mr. Janneh, who was conducting the sales and recording transactions on paper. “When he gave prices, I advised that D5,000 was too low for a particular cattle; I suggested D12,000 instead,” Kora said, adding that his interventions drew the suspicion of other attendees.

He also recounted other observations, including a tour of the area around Kanilai, where he saw crocodiles near the road and visited the local Grand Mosque before reaching the sales ground. He emphasised that his visit was motivated by curiosity and a desire to understand the location, not initially to intervene in the sales.

He clarified that he was accompanied by his driver and another person in his car during the visit, and that interactions with sellers were limited. While other officials were present, he only recognised the individual directly involved in the transactions on the second day, noting that people became wary of his presence during this period.

Kora confirmed that all statements submitted to the committee reflected his observations, signed and verified as accurate. He stressed that his testimony is aimed at providing clarity on the events in Kanilai, highlighting both the sales process and the environment surrounding the transactions.

Kora’s testimony gives the Special Select Committee critical insight into the post-Jammeh cattle sales identified by the Janneh Commission, shedding light on operational practices and emphasising the need for transparency and oversight in asset disposal. His account underscores the committee’s ongoing efforts to ensure accountability in the management of public and private assets.
