Ahmadiyya Dental Surgery Marks 53 Years, Promises More Affordable Services

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Dental Surgery has marked its 53rd anniversary, celebrating over five decades of providing quality and affordable oral healthcare services to the Gambian public.

Established in 1972 at Picton Street in Banjul, the dental facility served patients in the capital for ten years before relocating to Tallinding, where it now operates alongside the Ahmadiyya Muslim Hospital. The move was aimed at expanding space and improving service delivery.

Speaking during the commemoration, Dr. Saad Amin Malik, the current dentist-in-charge, paid tribute to the founding fathers of the clinic for their foresight and dedication in establishing the facility at a critical time, just years after The Gambia gained independence.

“It was pivotal at the time and remains so today. Thousands of patients have gone through our care over the years, having their dental concerns resolved with compassion and professionalism,” Dr. Malik said.

He noted that the clinic offers a wide range of services, including extractions, fillings, dentures, scaling and polishing, root canal treatment, braces, crowns, and X-rays, among many others.

Dr. Malik highlighted that the clinic has consistently fulfilled its mission of providing reliable and affordable services, adding that it now boasts a team of highly qualified Gambian staff, with the exception of the dentist-in-charge.

Tracing the history of leadership at the facility, Dr. Malik named his predecessors, beginning with Dr. Haq, the pioneer dentist who first established the clinic, followed by Dr. M.A. Sooltangoes, Dr. Nusrat Pasha, Dr. Abdourahmane Koya, Dr. Valishah Ahmad, and Dr. Nasir Khan before his own appointment.

“All of these men were outstanding professionals recognized globally for their commitment and excellence,” he said.

As part of the anniversary celebration, Dr. Malik announced a significant reduction in service charges, effective this month, to make dental care even more accessible to the public.

He also expressed appreciation to Amir Baba F. Trawally, Chairperson of the Board of Governors of the Nusrat Jehan Scheme, under which the dental clinic operates. Dr. Malik praised the Amir’s leadership and thanked both past and present staff for their dedication and contribution to the clinic’s success.

Dawda Nyagado, one of the longest-serving staff members who has worked under four different dentists, attributed the clinic’s success to hard work, honesty, and integrity, adding that it is now equipped with modern tools to meet patients’ needs.

During the event, staff members received new uniforms and certificates of appreciation in recognition of their commitment and service. In his remarks, Amir Baba F. Trawally congratulated the team and emphasized the importance of professionalism and unity in their work.

“A uniform is not just clothing—it is a symbol of identity and togetherness,” the Amir stated.

The ceremony ended with light refreshments shared among the staff and guests.
