A new EU funded project aims to support Gambian migrants

 

A new project – COMPASS (The Observatory of Human Mobility between the Canary Islands and Africa) – was officially launched at the Gambia Hospitality and Training Institute (GTHI) on 13/10/2025.

Funded by the European Union MAC (Madeira-Azores-Canary Islands) Interreg programme, it aims to comprehensively address the migration phenomenon by proposing solutions to challenges that arise at different stages, from the arrival of migrants to their integration into new societies.

The project focuses on communication and awareness-raising, and circular migration through vocational training.

By promoting circular migration, the aim is to create a win-win situation, where migrants can acquire skills, contribute to the economic development of their countries of origin, and enhance their quality of life.

Attending the launch event on 13 October, EU ambassador Imma Roca i Cortés stated: “This project is a concrete example of our commitment to supporting The Gambia’s development and migration management efforts. the project will have a meaningful impact on the lives of Gambian migrants and their communities.

The COMPASS project it’s a testament to the comprehensive approach adopted by EU in the area of migration and mobility within the region and notably with The Gambia.
