The Minister of Information, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, told journalists at the government monthly press conference that major achievements have been registered by the Gambia government in 2024, which includes support for the agriculture and education sectors.
Honourable Ceesay also spoke about the salary increment and the support for NAWEC.
“The government has supported NAWEC with D20 million for ongoing electricity and water projects in rural areas. Since independence, NAWEC has recorded an expansion of 93,000 meters, reflecting progress in electricity availability nationwide.” He said
Ceesay noted strides in balancing educational opportunities between urban and rural areas, with over 3,000 students receiving scholarships. He also highlighted the expansion of basic health centers across the country.
The agriculture sector received D316 million to support initiatives such as cashew production and small ruminant farming. Infrastructure development included the construction of over 1,000 kilometers of roads nationwide.
Inflation rates have dropped from 18% to between 10% and 8%, with a target of 5% by next year. Additionally, salaries have been increased by 30% in 2024.
Professor Abdou Karim Jallow, Director General of the Gambia Information Communications and Technology Agency, discussed advancements in the digital economy. The agency is focused on enhancing digital infrastructure, promoting e-governance, and increasing technological access to foster economic growth.
The press conference concluded with a Q&A session, where journalists sought further clarification on the measures and their expected impact on the Gambian economy.
