Madi Jobarteh Honoured as GPU Press Freedom Hero 2024

Madi Jobarteh, one of The Gambia’s most outspoken human rights activists and a staunch advocate for democracy, has been named the Press Freedom Hero 2024 by the Gambia Press Union (GPU). The prestigious award was conferred upon him at the GPU Journalism Awards ceremony on Saturday, December 7, 2024.
This accolade recognizes Jobarteh’s relentless commitment to promoting media rights and freedom of expression in The Gambia. For years, he has stood as a vocal defender of press freedom, championing journalists’ rights to operate without fear of censorship or intimidation. His advocacy underscores the critical role of the media in fostering transparency and holding those in positions of power accountable.
The GPU Journalism Awards, an annual event celebrating excellence in Gambian journalism, brought together journalists, media practitioners, and stakeholders from across the country. While the ceremony celebrated exceptional reporting and storytelling in various categories, Madi Jobarteh’s recognition as Press Freedom Hero was a highlight of the evening.
In his acceptance speech, Jobarteh emphasized the media’s indispensable role in building a democratic society. “An independent press is the cornerstone of any democracy. We must safeguard and support our journalists as they shine a light on the truth, even in the face of adversity,” he remarked.
The acknowledgment of Jobarteh’s efforts comes at a time when press freedom continues to face significant challenges, both locally and globally. His recognition serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting independent journalism as a pillar of democracy.
The GPU, through this award, not only celebrates Jobarteh’s tireless efforts but also calls on all stakeholders to renew their commitment to fostering an environment where the press can thrive without fear. As The Gambia continues its journey toward democratic consolidation, the role of individuals like Madi Jobarteh remains pivotal in ensuring that press freedom remains a protected and celebrated right.
The Gambia Press Union has once again demonstrated its commitment to honoring those who champion the ideals of democracy and freedom of expression, reinforcing the media’s critical role in shaping a transparent and accountable society.
