Yunus English School Shines at Gambia College’s World Animal Day Celebration

Yunus English School emerged as the proud winner of the inter-school competition on animal welfare, themed “The World is Our Home Too,” held at Gambia College on November 9th. The event, originally meant to celebrate World Animal Day on October 4th, had to be rescheduled due to the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust’s own World Animal Day celebrations on that day. Nonetheless, the event at Gambia College brought together students, animal welfare activists, and educators to raise awareness about animal rights and the importance of protecting all living creatures.

The celebration was organized by the Animal Welfare Association, and despite the slight change in timing, it was a vibrant gathering aimed at promoting kindness, respect, and understanding toward animals. This year’s celebration at Gambia College saw an inspiring array of performances, speeches, and discussions, as students from various schools competed and shared their passion for animal welfare. In addition to Yunus English School, participating institutions included Bottrop Kinderdoff Senior Secondary, Sheikh Hamadan Senior School, Model Senior School, Jambur Senior School, Busumbala Farato Upper Basic School, Smiling Coast Primary and Nursing, Blood Squad Comedy, and Kombo Kerewan Upper and Senior School.

A highlight of the event was the musical performance by Jali Musa Mawdo Susso, who created a festive atmosphere with his musical interlude. In a delightful turn, Jali Musa invited Mr. Jobateh, a teacher and coordinator from Yunus English School, to join him on stage. Together with Mr. Jobateh’s students, they added a dynamic dance performance, turning the stage into a celebration of unity and joy.

The celebration was graced by notable figures, including Dr. Kebba Daffeh, former Director of the Department of Livestock and Animal Science (DLAS) and an international representative of Animal Welfare Advocacy Africa. Teachers and coordinators from various schools also attended, further emphasizing the collaborative spirit of the event.

This year’s World Animal Day event at Gambia College offered an excellent opportunity for students and the community to learn more about the critical issues facing animals, including cruelty, neglect, and conservation. It also encouraged participants to consider their role in promoting the well-being of animals both in The Gambia and worldwide.

For Yunus English School, the victory in the competition was a testament to their strong commitment to promoting animal rights and environmental responsibility. The school’s participation not only showcased their students’ talents but also highlighted their dedication to raising awareness and taking action on behalf of animal welfare.

World Animal Day, celebrated annually across the globe, is a powerful reminder of the importance of fostering a compassionate and sustainable relationship with animals. This year’s event in The Gambia, though delayed, was a resounding success, leaving participants inspired to continue advocating for animals and taking meaningful steps toward a more compassionate world.
