The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in its monitory role complementing the work of the TRRC, hosted a significant validation event today to discuss the report on the status of the implementation of the Government’s White Paper regarding the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC).
The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including government officials, victim-led organizations, and NGOs, emphasizing a collaborative approach to justice and accountability in The Gambia.
During the gathering, attendees were granted the opportunity to review the draft report, identify challenges, and contribute additional information to enhance its contents. NHRC Chairperson, Immanuel Daniel Joof, highlighted the crucial role of stakeholders in the National Monitoring Committee to support the NHRC in overseeing the implementation of the TRRC recommendations.
The UN Resident Coordinator, Seraphine Wakana, underscored the need for dedication, political will, and adequate resource allocation to ensure the full realization of the TRRC recommendations. Madi Ceesay, a National Assembly member and Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Human Rights and Constitutional Matters, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the necessity for effective implementation of the TRRC’s findings.
This collaborative validation event marks a crucial step towards fostering human rights and accountability in The Gambia, as participants work together to ensure the meaningful application of the TRRC’s recommendations.
