The semi-urban settlement of Kombo Brikama experiences substantial rainwater inundation annually due to poor drainage systems. The Jambar Sanneh neighborhood and the vicinity of the Central Market are particularly vulnerable. After last night’s heavy rain, our team interacted with residents who expressed frustration about the challenging conditions during the rainy season. In Brikama Misira, Lamin Jadama told our reporter that many taxi drivers refuse to travel there due to the poor road conditions. He mentioned that drivers are often hesitant to transport baggage and passengers may need to disembark on the main highway and continue on a wheelbarrow. While the street from Brikama-Misira Cashpower Junction has been fairly rehabilitated, drainage remains a concern as some compounds were filled with water last night. Near the Brikama Market, vendors were seen walking through filthy, inundated rainwater. Alhagie Badjie, a resident of Gidda Forets, expressed concern, saying, “We are warriors because this is just the beginning of the rain. If we experience a heavy downpour, it will be a disaster for us.” Some taxi drivers we spoke to also expressed concern that poor roads could lead to mechanical problems for their vehicles. “What customers pay is very minimal. We are not going to sacrifice for anyone,” said Boy Pullo. The Brikama Area Council faces challenges in swiftly rehabilitating the major streets. However, earlier this year, the councils disbursed funds to councilors to facilitate development projects in their communities.
