BAC has confirmed the arrest of Nyambai Ward Councillor.

 

In response to clashes between Operation Clear The Road and vendors at the Brikama Market this morning, the Brikama Area Council announced the arrest of Honorable Mamadou Jawo Jallow, the Councillor for Nyambia Ward. This morning, Mr. Manneh and his team arrived at the Brikama Market during the peak of Tobaski Sales. According to the BAC, the Honorable Jallow, who also serves as the Chairperson of the Market & Car Park Committee, was taken into custody by PIU officers accompanying the Operation Clear the Road team at the Brikama Market. He was subsequently detained at the Brikama Police Station. Hon. Jawo, who also serves as the Chairperson of the Market & Car Park sub-committee, was engaged in a discussion with the team during the demolition of vendors’ properties on the newly constructed road at Nana Junction, Brikama. He was arrested for attempting to explain the reasons behind the vendors occupying the space. According to the statement issued by the BAC, the vendors occupied the newly constructed road based on technical advice that vehicles (traffic) would resume use of the particular road 28 days after its completion. Furthermore, the statement mentioned that Hon. Jawo was exposed to tear gas by security personnel while en route to the Brikama Police Station and was subsequently taken to the Brikama Hospital for medical attention. In the wake of heavy clashes between Operation Clear The Road and the vendors at the Brikama Market this morning, the Brikama Area Council issued a statement announcing the arrest of Honorable Mamadou Jawo Jallow, the Councillor for Nyambia Ward.

It could be recalled that Mr Manneh and the Team descended on the vicinity of the Brikama Market this morning as Tobaski Sales is at its peak.

According to the BAC, Honourable Jallow is acting in his capacity as chairperson of the Market & Car Park Committee of the council as theta tries to destroy stalls around the newly constructed road at Nana-Junction.

“Hon. Cllr. for Nyambai ward Mamadou Jawo Jallow was arrested earlier this morning by the PIU officers accompanying the operation clear the road team, in the Brikama Market.
Hon. Jawo who also doubled as the Chairperson Market & car park sub-committee of the Council was arrested and detained at the Brikama Police Station.
The premise of his arrest was his engagement with the team during the destruction of vendors’ properties on the newly constructed road at Nana Junction, Brikama.
Hon. Jawo in his capacity as the Chairperson of the Market and car park sub-committee, was trying to inform the destruction team of the rationale behind the vendors occupying the space but was faced with the heavy hand of the security personnel leading to his arrest and subsequent detention.”
The statement further added that the rationale for vendors occupying the newly constructed road was premised on technical advice that, vehicles (traffic) shall resume on the particular road after 28 days from completion. “Thus, the road remains blocked for vehicle passage to observe this technical advice.
Similarly, our Hon. Chairman was confronted with tear gas by security personnel on his way to the Brikama Police Station and was rushed to the Brikama Hospital for Medical attention.”
