Gambian Duo Feature for UD Songo in CAF Champions League Opener

By: Madi Senghore

Gambian goalkeeper Ebrima “Onana” Jaiteh started for Mozambican champions UD Songo in their 1-0 home defeat to Angolan giants Petro de Luanda in the first leg of the CAF Champions League first-round tie on Sunday.

Jaiteh, who played a key role in helping UD Songo win the Mozambican league title last season, was handed the starting goalkeeping position for the continental encounter.

The Gambian goalkeeper was also named the second-best goalkeeper in the Mozambican league last season, underlining his growing reputation in the country’s top flight.

Fellow Gambian Ousman Senghore also featured for UD Songo in the encounter, marking a notable appearance for the two Gambian players on Africa’s premier club football stage.

Despite home advantage, UD Songo failed to find the net as Petro de Luanda secured a narrow victory, giving the Angolan side an advantage ahead of the return leg.

UD Songo will need to overturn the one-goal deficit in the second leg to advance to the next stage of the CAF Champions League.
