UDP commemorates 30 years with a large rally in Brikama, showcasing its accomplishments.
The United Democratic Party (UDP) is commemorating its 30th anniversary today with a grand rally at the Brikama SSP Football Field, uniting its members and backers from all corners of the nation.
This milestone represents three decades of the UDP’s political expedition and its significance in instilling democracy in The Gambia.
As veteran opposition leader and UDP chairman, Ousainou Darboe graces the event, he is greeted with great fervor by the crowd as he stands atop his Cadillac Escalade, waving to the cheering supporters who enthusiastically chant his name.
Since its inception, the UDP has participated in numerous presidential elections, contending against former president Yahya Jammeh as well as current President Adama Barrow.
Darboe has been the party’s presidential candidate in 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011, and most recently in 2021. However, in the 2016 election, he was unable to run as he was detained at the time, resulting in Adama Barrow’s victory as the coalition candidate.
The rally serves as an opportunity for the party to celebrate its rich legacy, recognize its loyal supporters, and reflect on its significant contribution to the growth of democracy in The Gambia.
